Education 4 Enterprise - Overview

Dots

Education 4 Enterprise is a key component of Enterprise Northland’s strategy to lift the attitudes and aspirations of Northlanders and to ensure that Northland is a top performing region of its type in New Zealand.

Starting in 1999 with the Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), run by the Enterprise New Zealand Trust, Enterprise Northland gained funding support from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise for two pilot programmes which are unique to Northland – the Young Entrepreneur Programme (YEP) and the Northland Enterprising Teachers project (NET). These programmes have developed into the Northland Education 4 Enterprise project.

The key aim of the strategy is to develop an enterprise culture across the curriculum and to provide the resources, training and motivation to enable this to happen. Schools involved make a commitment to delivering enterprise programmes and developing an enterprise culture in their school.

The results of the strategy have been outstanding – the number and quality of school community partnerships continue to rise, new business enterprises are supported, most of Northland’s secondary schools are involved, teachers and students are enthusiastic, new programmes and approaches to teaching are being put in place, and Northland is now recognised as the leading region in New Zealand in the area of Education 4 Enterprise.

Currently Northland is one of four regions funded by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the Ministry of Education, with the support of the Tindall Foundation.

The four regions, Northland, Counties-Manukau, Nelson Bays and the West Coast, make up the "Regional Education for Enterprise Cluster Initiative".

A significant aspect of the strategy has been the forging of partnerships with key organisations including central and local government, the private sector and the Northland business community.

Of major significance to the success of the strategy is the funding support from Northland’s two lines companies – Top Energy and Northpower. By funding Enterprise Coordinators in each school, Top Energy and Northpower have enabled enterprise to have real status across the curriculum and enabled a greater sense of responsibility to ensure the effective delivery of the curriculum in an enterprisening way.
