A New Zealand first, in 2004, the Northland Sustainable Tourism Charter Project, part of the Activate Northland project, enabled tourism businesses to move towards sustainable practices at a pace within their capability.

The project was guided by the Northland Sustainable Tourism Charter, which outlined what businesses, community groups, local government and iwi considered the key characteristics of an enduring tourism sector.

A New Zealand first, in 2004, the project grew from a partnership between the Ministry for the Environment, Ministry of Tourism, Enterprise Northland and Northland’s tourism industry.

Six Northland tourism businesses took part in the pilot programme. The concept was rolled out to five other New Zealand regions – while in Northland 30 plus businesses participated.
