David Budge wins the Hutley Prize

On Thursday 25 th June, Whangarei Boys High School student David Budge became the first ever recipient of the Hutley Prize. The Hutley Prize is awarded for outstanding achievement in any field or endeavour including music, art, business, science, charity and social work.

The prize of $1000 was awarded to David recognising his outstanding record of community service including being a member of the Tutukaka Coast Community Church committee, a leader of the Frontline Youth Group, and band member at Whangarei Baptist Church . David has volunteered his services to assist at community events like the Ngunguru School Fireworks, SADD (Students Against Drink Driving) mock funeral at Whangarei Girls' High School, ANZAC services at Whangarei Boys' High School and the Kauri Veterinary Hospital Christmas party in 2007. David's talents as a piper have been recognised at the Highland Games in Waipu. He is also a member of the school debating team and Education for Enterprise Student Forums coordinated by Enterprise Northland.

Three other outstanding students applied for the prize. Michael Cate, Dylan French, and Marcus Hansen were awarded $500 each in recognition of their achievements in various fields.

When presenting the awards, David Hutley, founder of the Hutley Prize, noted the high standard of applicants. "It was a very difficult job to choose a winner," he said. "The contest was extremely close."

The awards ceremony was attended by the Deputy Mayor Kahu Sutherland, representatives from Whangarei Boys' High School and its Old Boys Association, Jeff Smith from the Northland Chamber of Commerce.

David Hutley is an old boy of Whangarei Boys High School , and has set up the Hutley Prize to coincide with the 50 th year since his graduation from the school. The prize will be awarded annually.
