Northland stands to gain from direct Canadian flights |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
21 January, 2008DESTINATION NORTHLAND : MEDIA RELEASES 2008Northland stands to be one of the big winners from new direct flights from Vancouver to New Zealand. The new Air New Zealand service began in November, bringing three direct flights per week from Vancouver to Auckland and meaning Canadian visitors no longer have to travel via Los Angeles or San Francisco . Each flight can carry more than 300 passengers and the new service has met with strong demand. Destination Northland General Manager Robyn Bolton said Northland's subtropical climate, beaches and authentic Maori culture are seen as an appealing contrast for Canadians. "They are an active people and live in a country where snowy mountains are within easy reach. While some parts of New Zealand may be considered more of what they already have at home, Northland represents something fresh and different as a holiday destination." Ms Bolton said Canadians, who currently comprise four percent of Northland's international visitors, have a relatively high average daily spend. Canadians receive three weeks' annual leave each year (a week more than residents of the United States), making overseas trips an easier option for them. Destination Northland has hosted familiarisation visits from members of the Canadian travel trade, as well as key travel journalists, and has also carried out an in-market visit to Canada to update the trade and media on Northland products and opportunities. |
