||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
26 June, 2003ENTERPRISE EDUCATION : MEDIA RELEASES 2003Leading New Zealand entrepreneur Stephen Tindall has given 200 Northland enterprise education students a key secret to succeeding in business: treat people with respect. The Young Enterprise Scheme and Young Entrepreneur Programme students were treated to the business insights of the Warehouse founder as part of a recent Enterprise Week in Northland. Mr Tindall, who is about to retake day-to-day management control of the country's biggest retail group, told students at a seminar in Whangarei that the way they treat those involved in their business will have a profound affect on how successful they are. "It is vitally important that you treat all people with respect." "With your employees this involves three essentials: praise, encouragement and coaching. With your customers it involves understanding what they want, and giving it to them, so they believe in your business," Mr Tindall says. Mr Tindall adds: "And believe in yourself. Have the self-confidence to get up and do something, and be prepared to learn through your failures." Mr Tindall says another key ingredient to success in business is research. "Gather all the knowledge that you require, develop the appropriate information systems, and work closely with the people that will use that knowledge and those systems." Mr Tindall's presentation to the student seminar was followed by Telecom Area Manager Cameron Bell , who used an audio-visual presentation to update students on developments in information technology, and how to access and use the technology. The director of the Northland Young Enterprise Programme, Frank Leadley , says the day-long culmination to Enterprise Week provided students with an opportunity to absorb two essential aspects to business: the importance of working effectively with people, and making the best use of information technology. "Enterprise Week, and the seminars, have given Northland students interested in enterprise some extremely valuable insights into how they can turn their dream into reality. It has been a successful exercise in helping some of our future business leaders to get closer to their goals. For further information: |
