2002 Young Enterprise Scheme Award winners - Whangarei students prove most enterprising |

15 October, 2002ENTERPRISE EDUCATION: MEDIA RELEASES 2002Businesses formed by Whangarei high school students - the majority females - have scooped the pools in the 2002 Northland Young Enterprise Scheme. The Young Enterprise Scheme (YES), which has operated in Northland for five years, is part of a wider youth enterprise education programme facilitated by the Northland Regional Council Community Trust and the Enterprise New Zealand Trust. YES, which is supported by an array of local sponsors, teaches groups of fifth and sixth form students how to establish and run a company, with awards given for their success in meeting various commercial disciplines. All the winning companies in 2002 were formed by high schools in the Whangarei District, with 19 of the 24 student directors involved being female. Kamo High School company, Dot.com, won overall winner for 2002, winning the Spotless Services Company of the Year Award. It created a business built around custom made website designs and construction of a Whangarei youth Website. Dot.com also won the Tenix Shipbuilding Technology Award for its technological developments, and approach to strategies and outcomes; the North Power Business Management Award for strategic planning, team work and delegation; and the Northern Advocate Media and Public Relations Award for oral and written communication. Dot.com was run by Mathew Morgan (Managing, Marketing and Sales Director); Hollie Doar (General Director); Teschna Christie (Financial and Communications Director); Craig Martin (Production Director); Jenna Hansen (Secretarial and Personnel Director); Peter Bruce (Mentor: Northland Polytechnic) and Alan Bayly (Teacher: Kamo High School) Bream Bay College company, Delectable Delights (which made and marketed hand made chocolate pigs) won the ANZ Innovation Award for originality, creativity and entrepreneurial flair, along with the Gilmore Brown Financial Management Award for effective budgeting, financial systems and controls, and viability. Delectable Delights was run by Sally Crook ( Production and Financial Director); Natalie Cullen (Personnel Director); Emma Allen (Secretarial and Communications Director); Katie McLean (Managing and Sales/Marketing Director); Mary Crook (Mentor) and Marie Smyth (Teacher: Bream Bay College). Tikipunga High School company Body Action (hand made hacky sacks) and Whangarei Girls High School company, Matariki (hand made cards), were joint winners of Rotary Clubs of Northland Award for Service. The judges said Body Action received the award for commitment to its product, and effective design and presentation. Matariki received the award for honesty and integrity in dealing with customers. Body Action was run by Johanna Weyers (Marketing Director); Tony Heap (Managing Director); Erana Barlow (Financial Director); Kelly Stone (Secretary); Alex Taka (Communications Director); Mentor: Pete Mullenger (Blue Revolution), Teacher: Jack Anderson (Tikipunga High School). Matariki was run by Amy Davidson (Sales and Marketing Director); Kylie Bryers (Managing Director); Ashlee de Rooy (Financial Director); Charlene Jurisich (Communications Director); Andrea Wynniatt (Production Director); Janet Lang (Teacher/mentor: Whangarei Girls' High School). A second Whangarei Girls High School company, Legends Alive (publishers of a book, "Legends of the Pacific") won the Beachcomber Resort Award for Commitment, willingness to adapt to change, evidence of trust within the company, ability to stick to its task, and perseverance. Legends Alive was run by Kimsy Damela (Production and Marketing Director); Catherine Piziki (Managing and Financial Director); Natasha Nagina (Secretarial and Communications Director); Lydia David (Personnel Director); Selina Ngengele (Sales Director); Ann Richards (Mentor: Ann Richards and Co Investments); Vince Cocurullo (Mentor: Compass Computers Ltd); Janet Lang (Teacher: Whangarei Girls High School).
