The key focus of the Northland Horticulture Forum is to promote horticulture as a sustainable and rewarding business and/or career choice by attracting, training and retaining good quality people into full or part time positions.

By collaboratively utilising the resources of a wide range of sectors within horticulture, the forum hopes to improve connections with schools, communities, job seekers and investors as well as raise the profile of the industry as a whole.

Other points of focus will be to promote the importance of the sector to the regional economy and to ensure a constructive regulatory environment for the future development of the sector.

Over the Next Year

The Forum will engage with Horticulture NZ and Horticulture ITO to:

  • Increase the number of young Northlanders taking up scholarships
  • Promote and organise the Young Horticulturalist of the Year award
  • Coordinate a number of career promotional events and ensure relevant resources are available at schools
  • Formalise the existing steering group into an umbrella organisation that supports and promotes the horticulture industry in Northland

And in the Future

  • Promote the importance of the sector
  • Engage with local government regarding the regulatory environment
  • Identify other initiatives that will continue to grow the sector
